WHAT IS MEZZE?

Mezze (or meze) is a variety of small savory dishes that are meant to be shared and typically enjoyed as an appetizer.

The items included in mezze platters are versatile and vary from region to region in the Mediterranean and Middle East.

Traditional mezze combines all different types of Mediterranean cuisine and can include warm or cold dishes such as meatballs, skewers, or spanakopita as well as dips, fruits, veggies, olives and cheese.

One of the best things about a Greek mezze board is the recipe ideas are endless and there’s no right or wrong way to make it, just make sure everything is bite sized.

In Greece, you can find mezze dishes in small traditional greek restaurants called mezethopoleia (meaning the places that serve meze).

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE INCLUDED ON THIS GREEK MEZZE BOARD?

  • Kasseri cheesefind this cheese at a Mediterranean market or Trader Joe’s. Can be substituted for provolone or mozzarella.
  • Kefalograviera cheesefind this cheese at a Mediterranean market or Trader Joe’s. Can be substituted for parmesan or pecorino.
  • Salami of choice – I used an uncured peppered salami thinly sliced from the deli.
  • Tzatziki – use this recipe to make your own or purchase at the store.
  • Hummus – use this recipe to make your own or purchase at the store.
  • Whipped feta – use this recipe to make your own or purchase at the store.
  • Marinated olives + feta – use this recipe to make your own marinated olives or choose to simply combine pitted olives and cubed feta in a small bowl.
  • Marinated artichoke hearts – purchase at the store.
  • Roasted red peppers – roast your own red bell peppers or purchase a jar at the store.
  • Greek pepperoncinis – find jarred whole Greek pepperoncinis and leave whole on the board.
  • English cucumber – leave skin on and slice into sticks or rounds.
  • Grapes – green or red work well.
  • Fig jam – can be substituted for apricot jam, strawberry jam or pepper jelly.
  • Dried apricots – can be substituted for dried figs or dates.
  • Salted pistachios – choose already shelled pistachios or use another nut you like.
  • Honey roasted peanuts – use any nut you like.
  • Roasted chickpeas – optional choice.
  • Toasted pita bread – use this recipe to make your own or purchase from the store. Lightly toast pita bread and cut into wedges.
  • Sesame sticks – substitute for any breadstick you like.
  • Rosemary crackers – use any seasoned cracker you like.
  • Fresh mint – optional for garnish. Or use fresh thyme, oregano or dill to garnish your Greek mezze board.

HOW TO MAKE A GREEK MEZZE BOARD

Step 1 – Clean a large wood board. Gather all ingredients listed above.

Step 2 – Slice two cheeses (I like to cut one into long slices and one into cubes). Place the cheeses on opposite ends of the board.

Step 3 – Gather 4 small bowls and fill with feta-olive mixture, whipped feta with honey, hummus and tzatziki. Place throughout the board.

Step 4 – Next, fold salami and place in a river like formation.

Step 5 – Using 3 more small bowls, fill one with marinated artichoke hearts, one with roasted red pepper pieces and one with fig jam. Place throughout the board.

Step 6 – Fill in gaps with sliced cucumber, pepperoncinis, grapes, dried apricots, peanuts, pistachios and roasted chickpeas.

Step 7 – Last, add the toasted pita bread wedges, sesame sticks and rosemary crackers. Use some fresh mint leaves to garnish the edges (optional).

MORE GREEK MEZZE INGREDIENT IDEAS

You may be wondering what else to include on your Greek mezze platter.

You should customize the board to your liking and personal preferences. Whether it be vegetarian, hot foods or cold foods, a mix of both, just cheeses and meats or all dips.

The best mezze boards in my opinion include a wide variety of ingredients that will take your tastebuds on a flavorful journey throughout the Mediterranean.

And there are truly endless options! I’ve included some more ideas below.

MAKE AHEAD INSTRUCTIONS

Here are a few tips for making your Greek Mezze Board ahead of time:

  1. Prepare all dips 1-2 days in advance.
  2. Slice cheeses and salami 1 day in advance.
  3. Assemble platter a few hours ahead of serving, cover with plastic wrap and store in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

TIP: We suggest waiting to prepare your fruit, veggies, pita bread, and crackers until just before serving to maintain peak freshness.
