The Freddo Cappuccino is an iconic 3-ingredient Greek iced coffee made with freshly brewed espresso and topped with a thick layer of silky cold milk foam.

If you’ve ever visited Greece, chances are you’ve seen nearly everyone around drinking a Freddo Cappuccino.
I just spent the summer in Greece with my family, and we had no fewer than two Freddo Cappuccinos a day.

It’s an absolute staple of Greek island life, and honestly, I don’t know how I’m supposed to survive without them now.
So naturally, I had to recreate the exact version we were drinking every day and share it with you.
WHAT IS A FREDDO CAPPUCCINO?
A Freddo Cappuccino is Greece’s most popular iced espresso drink.
Unlike an American iced cappuccino, the Greek version features espresso that is blended with sugar and ice until slightly creamy, then poured over fresh ice and topped with a thick layer of cold foamed milk.
The drink originated in Greece during the 1990s as espresso culture became increasingly popular.
Today, it’s considered a staple in nearly every Greek café, especially during the warmer months.
The signature feature that sets a Freddo Cappuccino apart is its luxurious layer of cold milk foam, which slowly blends into the espresso as you sip.
FREDDO CAPPUCCINO INGREDIENTS

2 shots espresso (4 ounces) – Freshly brewed espresso creates the rich coffee base.
2 teaspoons granulated sugar – Traditional medium sweetness (“metrio” in Greece). Adjust to taste.
Ice cubes – Used both for chilling the espresso and serving.
¼ cup skim milk – Essential for creating the thick, stable cold foam.
INGREDIENT NOTES
Espresso – Fresh espresso gives the most authentic flavor. Use an espresso machine, Nespresso, or another method capable of producing concentrated espresso.
Milk – Nonfat or Skim milk is the secret! Lower-fat milk creates the thick, glossy foam that’s characteristic of an authentic Greek Freddo Cappuccino. Whole milk and heavy cream won’t produce the same stable foam (using the correct milk is essential here).
Sugar – in Greece you’ll typically order your coffee based on sweetness:
- Sketos – No sugar
- Metrios – Medium sweetness (this recipe)
- Glykos – Sweet
HOW TO MAKE A GREEK FREDDO CAPPUCCINO
Step 1: Brew the espresso
Pull two fresh shots of espresso (4 oz).
While still hot, add the granulated sugar.
Blend using an electric handheld milk frother until the sugar dissolves completely and a light foam begins to form.
Step 2: Blend with ice
Add one or two ice cubes to the espresso.
Blend again for several seconds until the espresso becomes cold, slightly frothy, and creamy.
Step 3: Prepare the milk foam
In a separate cold stainless-steel cup, add the chilled skim milk.
Blend using an electric mixer or milkshake maker until it transforms into a thick, glossy cold foam.
The colder the milk (and even the mixing cup), the better your foam will be.
Step 4: Assemble
Fill a serving glass with fresh ice cubes.
Pour the chilled espresso over the ice.
Slowly pour the cold milk foam over the top. Serve immediately!

SPOONFUL OF SI TIPS FOR SUCCESS
I learned all these tips firsthand from the baristas in Greece during my summer vacation this year!
- Use very cold skim or nonfat milk for the thickest foam. The right milk is essential for getting the best results!
- Chill your stainless-steel frothing cup beforehand for café-quality results.
- Blend the espresso twice: once with sugar, then again after adding ice for the smoothest texture.
- Use freshly pulled espresso rather than brewed coffee for authentic flavor.
- Drink immediately before the foam begins to settle.
RECIPE VARIATIONS
Unsweetened: skip the sugar entirely for a stronger coffee flavor.
Sweet: add an extra teaspoon of sugar for a sweeter café-style drink.
Cinnamon: finish with a light dusting of cinnamon over the milk foam.
Freddo Espresso: skip the milk foam altogether for Greece’s other famous iced espresso drink which is just the espresso blended until frothy sans milk foam.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO MAKE A FREDDO CAPPUCCINO
Espresso Machine
- I use this breville machine!
- Freshly brewed espresso gives the most authentic flavor.
- A Nespresso or other method that produces concentrated espresso also works.

Electric Handheld Milk Frother
- This is necessary for getting the espresso frothy as well as the milk if you don’t have a milkshake maker.
- I use this one from Amazon!

Milkshake Maker
- In Greece the cold milk foam is always made in a milkshake maker as it’s much more powerful than the handheld version.
- This is the one I have from Amazon!

Stainless-Steel Cup
- Using a very cold stainless-steel cup to froth the milk is a key tip to get the best silky cold milk foam.
- Make sure to pre-chill the cup in the freezer before making the freddo cappuccino.

RECIPE FAQ’S
Yes, though freshly brewed espresso gives the most authentic flavor. A Nespresso or other method that produces concentrated espresso also works.
No, you can create the freddo cappuccino using an electric mixer/milk frother. However, in Greece the cold milk foam is always made in a milkshake maker as it’s much more powerful than the handheld version.
Your milk is likely too warm or too high in fat. Always use ice-cold skim or nonfat milk and froth it in a chilled stainless-steel cup for the best results.
It’s highly discouraged as it won’t create the signature thick cold foam. Skim or nonfat produces the most authentic texture.
A Freddo Espresso contains only chilled espresso and ice, while a Freddo Cappuccino includes a thick layer of cold foamed milk on top.
