WHAT IS TYROSALATA?
Tyrosalata is a Greek dish made of whipped feta cheese.
The Greek word ‘Tyrosalata’ translated to English means, cheese salad. In Greece, you will find Tyrosalata served as an appetizer or paired with grilled meat.
There are many ingredient variations like adding peppers to make it a spicy feta dip, which is then called ‘Tyrokafteri’.
For this recipe we’ll stick to the classic version, then you can make any adjustments to your liking.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO I NEED?
Block feta – always buy a high-quality feta block in brine.
Greek yogurt – plain whole Greek yogurt is best. Adjust amount used (more or less based on desired consistency).
Garlic – fresh garlic cloves are best, minced finely.
Olive oil – essential for any Greek dish and helps mellow the saltiness of the feta.
Dried oregano – if using fresh herbs, use 1-2 tablespoons.
Honey – local honey or hot honey work best.
Fresh thyme – adds a fresh and fragrant flavor but is optional.
Red pepper flakes – optional if you want a little kick.
HOW TO MAKE TYROSALATA (WHIPPED FETA WITH HONEY)
Step 1 – Break up the block of feta into crumbles and add to the food processor. Add in Greek yogurt, minced garlic, olive oil, and dried oregano.
TIP: No food processor? Use a blender, immersion blender, mixer, or just mash the feta up well with a fork.
Step 2 – Turn on food processor and pulse for 30 seconds. Scrape down the sides as needed and then pulse again for 30-60 seconds or until desired consistency is reached.
TIP: Adjust by pulsing for more or less time until desired consistency is reached.
Step 3 – Transfer mixture to a serving dish. Top with desired amounts of drizzled honey, fresh thyme, and red pepper flakes.
HOW TO SERVE TYROSALATA
The best part about this dish is how many ways you can serve and enjoy it.
A few of my favorites:
- Appetizer dip – serve with pita triangles, toasted bread, vegetables or chips.
- Spread – use in a pita wrap or as a condiment in a sandwich.
- Crostini – spread whipped feta on crostini and top with roasted tomatoes, mixed olives, or pine nuts.
- Meat accompaniment – serve on the side with grilled meat.
- Vegetarian snack – serve with fresh vegetables like carrots, cucumber, and peppers.
RECIPE VARIATIONS
Consistency – Add more or less Greek yogurt depending on your preference.
Spice – Add more red red pepper flakes for a spicier dip or use a hot honey instead of plain.
Ingredients – Try using cream cheese instead of Greek yogurt.
Toppings – Instead of honey, top with toasted pine nuts, roasted tomatoes, pistachios, fig jam, pesto, drizzle of evoo, dried cranberries or pomegranate seeds.
